What is scarification?
The vertical knives of a lawn scarifier remove moss, weed, lawn debris, etc. The knives leave the grass in the soil, but the ‘rake’ of the machine penetrates the thatch layer. Moss is looser and is being removed.
By scarifying the grass is given the space and air to grow. So the roots can absorb sufficient water and nutrients again, which has a positive influence on grass growth and health.
As from March - April the soil gets warmer, this is the most ideal time to scarify. Everything depends on the temperature; scarify only in frost-free and dry weather conditions when the grass has optimal growing potentials. Do not scarify a wet lawn; it can damage your machine. Repeat your scarifying action in September - October and you have a healthy garden for entering the winter season. Don’t be too late, because the grass still has to get the chance to continue growing before winter starts.
Step 1: Preparing
Lime your lawn every winter. It dries out the moss and you will have less work with scarifying. Mow your lawn at a height of 2-3cm. Otherwise your lawn scarifier has to work harder before reaching the soil.
Step 2: Scarifying
Always proceed very carefully and do not scarify to deep the first time: you can start for instance at 5mm. You can set the knives at the ideal working depth yourself. This depends on the thickness of the thatch layer. Scarify your lawn in length as well as in width. This ensures all spots are treated and the soil is given enough air.
Step 3: Cleaning up
Collect the grass debris and the moss in the collection bag while scarifying. You can also choose to take everything away afterwards. With a rake you proceed quickly.
Step 4: Fertilising and reseeding
A lawn scarifier thins out your grass. Therefore it is important reseeding bare spots. Don’t wait too long to do this, otherwise moss will reappear. By fertilising, you restore the soil of your lawn and the grass will develop strong roots. If it doesn’t rain enough, don’t forget to spray the lawn.
Step 5: Enjoying young and recovered blades of grass
To conclude, everything you still need, is a little patience and maintaining your garden as you usually do. Just after scarifying, your lawn looks less attractive, but a few weeks later you can already display revived healthy-looking grass. You walk on real grass again instead of bare spots or weed.
Which lawn scarifier do I choose?
With the Powerplus lawn scarifiers you set the cutting depth yourself. Thanks to the carrying handle, you can easily move the device with one hand. By folding the handle, you don’t need a large storage space for this tool. The devices are safe to use and have a safety lock, so there is no risk the machine will start unintentionally.
You decide whether you go for an electric or a battery-powered lawn scarifier from our Dual Power range for even greater ease of use.
